Flooding As usual, the Independent has the best front cover of any paper: Also on the news this morning was watching the crumbling dam wall of Ulley reservoir - my grandma lives just down the valley in Whiston, and have spent many an evening in the Royal Oak pub in the village drinking a nice pint of Sam Smiths. Lots of pics of flooding in the Wicker arches in Sheffield, and also the Tesco's in Rotherham... Also on the theme of water and mud, the first pictures from the G Team's trip to Glastonbury are now available at the PASSION4GEOGRAPHY site.
Geography in the Times Yet again, some Geography bashing. An article by Jane Shilling which starts about the G Team's appearance on Today and later, begrudgingly, appreciates that actually the My Walks project which was one of the items is actually a wonderful thing... Here's the offending bit: A certain new year’s languor meant that I wasn’t paying very close attention to the Today programme on Monday morning, especially as they seemed unaccountably to have handed it over to a bunch of geographers to edit. Very worthy, no doubt, but terminal moraines are so not my thing at crack of dawn on the first day of the year . Reproduced below is Doreen Massey's excellent essay which was read out towards the end of the program. It succintly explains so much about the world we live in today, and the fundamental role of Geography in understanding it ! “Geographical perspectives” A mini-essay for the Today Programme 1 st January 2007 Professor Doreen Massey There is an...

Geography and Electricity General Electric: an American energy company have a nice site called GEOTERRA which is aimed at exploring ideas of renewable energy by providing a series of FLASH games on an island, which explores issues to do with energy conservation such as blasting air at windmills and steering trains around a route. Geography and Chocolate Certainly eaten a lot of it in the last 10 days or so... Charlie and Lola are a favourite of my kids. Was just browsing Amazon for some sales bargains, and found this new book, which is due to be published in February 2007, when it will cost £2.99 - you can pre-order now. Could be a good resource to use as a prize for younger geography students. Why not order several copies at that price... The book is to raise funds for COMIC RELIEF . There is going to be a RED NOSE DAY on the of March 2007, and the site is already up. You can download a set of excellent Interactive Whiteboard resources: 5 FLASH files which would make great sta...

Time Magazine's Person of the Year . This year, the winner is.... ME! And anyone else who has used the Internet to create and share content... Congratulations to us all. Read the story HERE. Also, don't forget to set your alarm clock for 6.30am on New Years Day Gift of a Goat Monday 1 January 2007 6:30-7:00 (Radio 4 FM) Ethical gifts of goats to help poor African families have become a popular Christmas present.
