A sad moment...Regular readers will know that I am partial to a fine single malt whisky. For the last few days I've been eking out the last of a rather fine bottle: a Limited Edition (just 2000 bottles) Independent bottling by Murray McDavid of a 16 year old Caol Ila (non chill-filtered of course), which was laid down in Bourbon casks (Mourvedre/Syrah...) and bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. The last drop will be drunk tonight !

Last night was a very windy night down in Norfolk, and across most of the country - the synoptic chart above is for mid-day today, but yesterday's chart showed the classic pattern of a mid-latitude depression. The sycamore tree in my garden lost all the leaves it had been clinging on to, and bushes were tapping against the windows. On the way home from a fancy dress party, my Noddy Holder hat blew off and I ended up in someone's front garden chasing it round in a gyre... Stairway to Devon Finally found a spare hour while watching PANORAMA TRUE BRITS, to write-up the geo-highlights of the holiday week. Spent a week in Dartmouth in late August in a house overlooking the harbour and the lower ferry. We had good weather most of the time, despite a string of depressions. Some highlights: Overnight stay at the Oatlands Chaser in Weybridge – recommended. There was a lot of traffic, as expected, heading to the SW, and ended diverting over the Newbury bypass and past Stonehenge in a queue. It was a wet day, and splashed our way through Totnes, and made it to our house above Bayard’s Cove overlooking the RIA that makes up the lower stretches of the River Dart. Picture: David Rayner CfBT Conference for Geography for new KS3 Curriculum Thanks to the 70+ Heads of Geography and other colleagues in various capacities who attended the CfBT Eastern Region Conference at the Holiday Inn in Norwich yesterday. It was hard work (especially as I followed it up with 2 hours plus at a parents evening...) but enjoyable, and good to talk to people and get their ideas for how they were going to be "creatively subversive...."
