Just back from excellent Kate Rusby concert at King's Lynn Corn Exchange. Here's one of the tracks: first song from second half, as played at an earlier festival: Bitter Boy...

Some good news.. Got a letter from RGS today, containing a ticket which said I'd been successful in the ballot for a seat to see Michael Palin Monday 8 October at 18.30 RGS-IBG Ballot Members only New Europe Michael Palin Michael talks about the making of his new BBC series, in which he sets out to discover the eastern half of his own continent, which he finds in a dramatic state of change. Going to be cutting it fine to get there from school and then back up the same evening, and will also be at RGS that same Thursday, and doing Norfolk conference the following day, and the previous weekend I'll have been up for Rush in Sheffield and the following Saturday it's down to London for GA meeting... The things I do for Geography...

A sad moment... Regular readers will know that I am partial to a fine single malt whisky. For the last few days I've been eking out the last of a rather fine bottle: a Limited Edition (just 2000 bottles) Independent bottling by Murray McDavid of a 16 year old Caol Ila (non chill-filtered of course), which was laid down in Bourbon casks (Mourvedre/Syrah...) and bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. The last drop will be drunk tonight ! You can see some live distilling going on at the webcam page. And if you've got a spare £999 which you could send to my PayPal account I could get a bottle of this 40 year old...

Geography and Blogging A new resources has just appeared on the Geographical Association website. It's a new online journal called GeogEd. The first item is an article by Phil Wood called Advances in E-Learning: The Case of Blogging in School Geography. This looks at blogging in geography, and name-checks the article I wrote for Teaching Geography in 2004, and then mentions some current Geog Blogs, though sadly not the 'original' GeoBlogs... Fame (ish) at last...

I was never into Zeppelin as much as some of my friends, but they're reforming for a concert in November, tickets to be allocated via ballot @ £125 a time. Apparently there have been 20 MILLION people enter the ballot via the site ! What countries have similar populations to that ?! And how accurate are those figures ?

Finally took the plunge yesterday, and went PRO with FLICKR. This means that for around £12 a year, I can have unlimited sets, photos, storage, uploads and use of a very nice interface for organising photos into sets or collections, which I did in less than 10 minutes. Plenty of images will be added over the next few months. Also looked at my GeoVisitors map and found a very remote visitor: someone on the borders of Nunavut and Manitoba apparently visited yesterday. If it was you, get in touch !

Time Lapse Geography Project Who's this cute little fella ? It's me ! I was aged 4, and was on holiday, as was our custom in the 1960s, on the East coast. The steelworks where my dad worked had their 'stop weeks' and we were at Flamborough Head: North Landing. There's an arch behind me, and you can see the jointing in the chalk. You can see the rock fall which has left rock debris at the base of the arch - judging by the height of me and the height of the arch, it's probably no more than 3 or 4 metres high. Now look at the image below by Flickr user James ! See how developed the arch is now, around 40 years later ! Shows that change happens quite slowly perhaps, but change still happens.... Anyone else got similar time-lapse geography photos from their family albums ? Could make a good series if all the geographers out there dug out the old black and white snaps and then compared them with today ! This is an exciting little possible project....

Confession time. I'm a Leeds United supporter. Ever since 1970 ish, when I wore the full white Leeds kit for my school PE lessons, complete with number 7 sock tags for Peter Lorimer. Before this current season, Leeds were docked 15 points in a harsh punishment by the FA. Yesterday, they beat Bristol to make it 6 wins in a row, which means they are now out of the bottom 3 in the league ! This is up there with their greatest achievements (and over the years there have been rather more bitter moments and injustices than achievements...) If they had started on level terms they would be on top of the league by some distance. "We are so proud, we shout it out loud...." etc. And this ties in with some resources I've just added to website about the regeneration of.... Leeds.

Joe Zawinul: 1932-2007 Image by Flickr user Berbera van den Hoek / Creative Commons license. Many thanks! This blog is about the world (through Geography) and occasionally Jazz (and beer and whisky, and books, and other stuff...) One person who was associated very much with jazz and world music through his work with Weather Report and a huge range of other musicians and projects was Joe Zawinul who died earlier this week. I've been listening to his music for more than 25 years. Played "Brown Street" very loud today... Never heard him ? Try THIS SELECTION OF MUSIC. Thanks for the music...
